The very first winery in North America to be owned and run by an Indigenous community, Nk’Mip Cellars winery means "bottomland" in the Okanagan Indigenous language since its located at the southern end of the Osoyoos Indian Reserve. Often referred to as the northern extremity of the Sonoran desert, conditions here are dry with bright summer days that help to craft richly-flavoured red wines. "Qwam Qwmt'' means "achieving excellence" in their local language and this range of wines is crafted in small quantities from 40 year old vines. The fruit for this powerful Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced just from one block located right below the winery in Osoyoos. The grapes are harvested in October once they reach full ripeness and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The young wine is then transferred to French and American oak barrels where it matures for 18 months before bottling. Blackberry, cassis and winter spice immediately burst out of the glass, while the first sip reveals a silky smooth texture and sumptuous dark fruit flavours which linger long on the tongue. The bold flavour profile and well-built structure will help the wine age beautifully in the cellar, although it can also be enjoyed now alongside dishes like barbecued ribs, herby roasted lamb, duck and aubergine parmigiana.
